This piece isn't about metaphysics (that the physical universe is somehow generated by mental activity) but phenomenology, how our individual experiences as conscious human beings are wholly based and dependent upon how the brain and nervous system interact with the world.
For a good explanation of what I'm getting at, I'd recommend Thomas Metzinger's book Being No One: The Self-Model Theory of Subjectivity, which gets into the neuroscience and philosophy of self. I also recommend his book The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self, a somewhat shorter introduction to his findings.
